Sometimes running traffics get clogged in the roads and highways due to over-crowd of vehicles; this is called traffic jam. When traffic Jam occurs, long lines of vehicles are seen standing motionless helplessly waiting anxiously to rush forward. It is a very common and painful problem, especially to the townsmen. Traffic jam creates untold suffering to the people going to their offices or work places. All the routine works fall disordered due to traffic jam. As a result, thousands of work-hours are wasted. Ambulances carrying serious patients have also to stand still. Passengers inside buses and cars suffer terribly during the hot days. However, there are many reasons behind traffic jam. The main reasons are narrow roads and streets in proportion to vehicles, unlicensed and defective vehicles driven by unskilled drivers, random parking and setting up temporary shops on the road. Moreover, violating traffic rules by the drivers and negligence of traffic police in duty are also important reasons for traffic jam. Besides, frequent traffic signal also creates regular traffic jam for some time. However, to avoid traffic jam effective measures should be taken against these problems. But the solution may not be very easy for a country because there are reasons which are related to the socio-economic condition and prevailing infrastructure of roads and highway in a country. This is why; traffic jam has turned into people’s constant company in many countries because government itself seems to be helpless at the teeth of this problem.

মাঝে মাঝে চলমান যানবাহন আটকা পড়ে সড়ক ও জনপথে যানবাহনের অতিরিক্ত ভীড়ের কারনে; একেই বলা হয় ট্রাফিক জ্যাম (যানজট)। যখন যানজট সৃষ্টি হয়, যানবাহনের দীর্ঘ লাইন দেখা যায় গতিহীনভাবে দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতে উদ্বেগের সাথে সামনের দিকে ধেয়ে চলার অপেক্ষায়। এটা খুবই সাধারন এবং যন্ত্রনাদায়ক সমস্যা, বিশেষ করে শহরবাসীদের জন্য। ট্রাফিক জ্যাম অবর্ননীয় কষ্টের সৃষ্টি করে অফিস বা কর্মস্থলগামী লোকেদের জন্য। সব ধরনের রুটিন বাধা কাজ স্থবির হয়ে পড়ে। ফলে, হাজার হাজার কর্মঘন্টা বিনষ্ট হয়ে যায়। সংকটাপণ্ণ রোগীদের বহনকারী অ্যামবুলেন্সগুলোও স্থবির হয়ে পড়ে। বাস ও কারের ভিতরের যাত্রীরা মারাত্বক কষ্ট পায় গরমের দিনে। যা হোক, যানজটের অনেক কারন আছে। প্রধান কারনগুলো হল- যানবাহনের অনুপাতে সরু রাস্তাঘাট, অদক্ষ ড্রাইভারদের দ্বারা চালিত লাইসেন্সবিহীন ও ত্রুটিপূর্ণ যানবাহন, রাস্তার উপর যত্রতত্র গাড়ি পার্কিং এবং অস্থায়ী দোকান বসানো। এছাড়া ড্রাইভারদের দ্বারা ট্রাফিক আইন লঙ্ঘন এবং ট্রাফিক পুলিশের দায়িত্বে অবহেলা ও যানজটের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কারণ। তাছাড়া ঘনঘন ট্রাফিক সিগনাল নিয়মিতভাবে কিছু সময়ের জন্য যানজট সৃষ্টি করে । যাই হোক, ট্রাফিক জাম এড়াতে এই সমস্ত সমস্যা গুলোর ব্যাপারে কার্যকরী পদক্ষেপ নিতে হবে কিন্তু সমাধানটা কোন একটি দেশের জন্য এত বেশি সহজ নাও হতে পারে, কারন অনেক কারণ আছে যেগুলো কোন একটি দেশের আর্থসামাজিক অবস্থা এবং রাস্তা ও জনপথের বিদ্যমান অবকাঠামোর উপরে নির্ভর করে। এই কারণে ট্রাফিক জাম অনেক দেশের জন্য নিত্যসঙী হয়ে উঠেছে। কারণ খোদ সরকারকেই এই সমস্যার মুখে অসহায় মনে হয়।
