A Garment worker is a very well-known figure in our country. They are ill-paid employees working in the ready-made garment industries. All kinds of workers- educated or uneducated; skilled, unskilled or semiskilled get opportunity to work in the garment factories. It is observed that most of the garment workers are women and they work for a small wage by which they can keep body and soul together along with their families.
It is a common scene that in the morning garment workers are seen first going to their workplaces in groups. They usually have to work from morning till evening which is certainly a violation of international law regarding daily work hours. Besides, they have to work overtime compulsorily. They hardly get any leave with payment. As they are ill paid, they live in hardship with their families. In most of the garment factories workers don’t have security. Fire accidents are a common phenomenon in garment industries that take away many lives of garment workers every year. The environment they work in is dirty and congested. They usually take their lunch sitting on the roof which is very unhygienic. Moreover, they don’t get paid due time and hardly get festival bonuses. Yet they cannot get organized because the owners strictly restrict their rights to form trade unions. As a result, they are frequently found revolting against the owners in demand of due wage, timely payment and bonus. However, despite a lot of adversities, many unemployed and uneducated men and women can dream of living their life narrowly by working in a garment factory.
