The fishermen are a very important section of people in our society. They live by catching and selling fishes and thus provide us with protein which is one of the most valuable food elements essential for our body. Usually, a fisherman lives by the side of a river or the sea. Most of the time, they remain busy fishing with boats and nets and sometimes in making and repairing their fishing nets. The fishermen are lower-class people.
They can hardly go beyond thinking of keeping body and soul together. Most of the fishermen who fish especially in the sea do not have their own nets and boats. They work with the owners for wages. Fishing in the sea is very challenging and risky. Every year, many fishermen die falling prey to storms and have watery graves. Though the fishermen work day and night, they hardly become solvent enough to lead a decent life. Most of them are illiterate. They live in huts densely-set with one another and are quite unconscious about their health and food. Their children scarcely get proper education. However, with the touch of communication technology like mobile phones, fishermen are also enjoying more advantages in fish marketing. Thus improving their condition. If the government took step to give them interest-free loan, their standard of life could be upgraded.

জেলেরা আমাদের সমাজের অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শ্রেণীর মানুষ। তারা মাছ ধরে এবং বিক্রি করে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে এবং এভাবে আমাদেরকে আমিষের যোগান দেয় যা অন্যতম সবচেয়ে মূল্যবান খাদ্য উপাদান যা আমাদের শরীরের জন্য অত্যাবশ্যকীয় । সাধারণত একজন জেলে নদী ও সাগরের তীরবর্তী এলাকায় বসবাস করে। বেশিরভাগ সময়ই তারা ব্যস্ত থাকে জাল ও নৌকা দিয়ে মাছধরা এবং মাঝে মাঝে, জাল তৈরি ও মেরামতের কাজে। জেলেরা সমাজের নিম্ন শ্রেণীতে বসবাস করে। তারা খুব কমই কষ্টেসৃষ্টে কোন রকমে বেঁচে থাকার বাইরে ভাবতে পারে। বেশিরভাগ জেলে, যারা বিশেষত সাগরে মাছ ধরে, তাদের নিজেদের কোন জাল ও নৌকা নেই। তারা মালিকের সাথে কাজ করে পারিশ্রমিকের বিনিময়ে। সাগরে মাছ ধরাটা খুবই চ্যালেঞ্জিং এবং ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ। প্রতিবছর অনেক জেলে ঝড়ের কবলে পড়ে মারা যায় এবং তাদের সলিল সমাধি ঘটে। যদিও জেলেরা দিনরাত পরিশ্রম করে তারা খুব কমই যথেষ্ঠ সচ্ছল হতে পারে একটা ভদ্রোচিত জীবনযাপন করার মত। তাদের অধিকাংশই মূর্খ। তারা কুড়ে ঘরে বাস করে যা একটার সাথে আরেকটা ঘন সন্নিবিষ্ট এবং তারা তাদের স্বাস্থ্য ও খাদ্যের ব্যাপারে সম্পূর্ণ অসচেতন । তাদের শিশুরা খুব কমই যথার্থ শিক্ষা পায়। যাই হোক, আধুনিক যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তি, যেমন- যেমন মোবাইল ফোন এর ছোঁয়ায় জেলেরা মৎস্য বাজারজাত করণে অধিক সুবিধা ভোগ করছে। এভাবে তাদের অবস্থার উন্নতি ঘটাচ্ছে। যদি সরকার তাদেরকে সুদ মুক্ত ঋণ প্রদানে পদক্ষেপ নিত, তাহলে তাদের জীবন মান আরো উন্নত হতে পারত।
