The Dog, the Cock and the Fox

Once, a dog and a cock became very good friends. One day, they wished to travel together to see the world around. So they decided to leave the farmyard and to walk along the road that led to the woods.
The two comrades traveled a long way until the sun had set. At nightfall, they decided to roost on a big old tree not very far from the woods. In order to spend the night, the cock flew up into the branches of the tree while the dog curled himself up inside the hollow trunk.
With the first glimmer of dawn, the cock woke up and crew as usual. The sound reached the ear of a fox that was hiding inside a bush nearby. At the presence of a cock, the fox immediately became greedy wishing to make it a breakfast of him.
The fox hurried to the tree where the Cock was roosting and said in a polite tune, “Heartiest welcome to our woods, dear sir. I’m very glad to see you here. Can’t we be good friend and play together?”
“I feel very pleased at your words, sir,” replied the Cock cleverly. “If you like to go around to the door of my house at the foot of the tree, my porter will let you in.” The sly hungry fox could wait no more. Scarcely had he went round the tree as he was told when the dog had seized him.
