Illiteracy

Illiteracy means the state of being unable to read or write. It is a curse to a person, society or a nation. It is evident that the nation which is more literate is more developed. So the rate of literacy or illiteracy indicates whether a country or a nation is rich or poor.
It is also a curse for human beings. Poverty and superstitions are considered to be the main causes of illiteracy. The development of a country or nation is impossible where most of the people are superstitious and when they think that female education is against religion and not necessary. Moreover, the poor are more interested in engaging their children in work than to send them to school. As a result, a great portion of our children get deprived of the light of education which results in lower literacy rate of the country. Illiteracy is also a great hindrance to the socio-economic development of a country. It creates a negative impact on the country’s economy. Unless illiteracy is rooted out from the society, it will bring out various social backwardness like overpopulation, chaos, disorder, barbarism, environment pollution, unhealthiness, diseases, sorrows and sufferings and also break down the law and order situation of a country. To remove illiteracy, it is very essential to take necessary and proper attempts by the government and implement them on priority basis. On the other hand, all the educated people also have social responsibility in this regard. The educated youths and adults should come forward to educate the poor-illiterate voluntarily. In this way, it may be possible for a nation to overcome the curse of illiteracy day by day.

নিরক্ষরতা বলতে লিখতে বা পড়তে না পারার অবস্থাকে বোঝায়। এটা ব্যক্তি, সমাজ বা জাতির জন্য অভিশাপ। এটা স্পষ্ট যে, যে জাতি বেশি শিক্ষিত সে জাতি বেশি উন্নত। তাই সাক্ষরতা বা নিরক্ষরতার হার নির্দেশ করে একটি দেশ বা জাতি ধনী না দরিদ্র। এটা মানুষের জন্যও অভিশাপ। দারিদ্র্য ও কুসংস্কারকে অশিক্ষার প্রধান কারণ হিসেবে বিবেচনা করা হয়। একটি দেশ বা জাতির উন্নয়ন অসম্ভব যেখানে অধিকাংশ মানুষ কুসংস্কারাচ্ছন্ন এবং যখন তারা মনে করে যে নারী শিক্ষা ধর্মের বিরুদ্ধে এবং প্রয়োজনীয় নয়। তাছাড়া দরিদ্ররা তাদের সন্তানদের স্কুলে পাঠানোর চেয়ে কাজে নিয়োজিত করতে বেশি আগ্রহী। ফলে আমাদের শিশুর একটি বড় অংশ শিক্ষার আলো থেকে বঞ্চিত হয় যার ফলে দেশের সাক্ষরতার হার কমে যায়। নিরক্ষরতা একটি দেশের আর্থ-সামাজিক উন্নয়নের ক্ষেত্রেও একটি বড় বাধা। এটা দেশের অর্থনীতিতে নেতিবাচক প্রভাব সৃষ্টি করে। সমাজ থেকে নিরক্ষরতার মূলোৎপাটন না হলে তা বিভিন্ন সামাজিক পশ্চাদপদতা বয়ে আনবে, যেমন- অতিরিক্ত জনসংখ্যা, অরাজকতা, বিশৃঙ্খলা, বর্বরতা, পরিবেশ দূষণ, অস্বাস্থ্যকরতা, রোগব্যাধি, দুঃখ-দুর্দশা এবং দেশের আইন-শৃঙ্খলা পরিস্থিতি ভেঙ্গে ফেলবে। নিরক্ষরতা দূর করার জন্য সরকারের প্রয়োজনীয় ও যথাযথ পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করা এবং অগ্রাধিকার ভিত্তিতে তা বাস্তবায়ন করা খুবই অপরিহার্য। অন্যদিকে সকল শিক্ষিত মানুষেরও এক্ষেত্রে সামাজিক দায়বদ্ধতা রয়েছে। শিক্ষিত যুবক ও প্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের স্বেচ্ছায় দরিদ্র-নিরক্ষরদের শিক্ষিত করতে এগিয়ে আসতে হবে। এভাবে দিনে দিনে একটি জাতির পক্ষে অশিক্ষার অভিশাপ দূর করা সম্ভব হতে পারে।
