When someone compels a child to work, it is called child labor. According to international law, those who are under 18 are called child and if they are compelled to work, this labor is called child labor. Child labor is completely prohibited and getting a child engaged in any work which is applicable for a man is punishable. 
But the reality is that children are being put into manual work in mills and factories deliberately without caring about the law. As a result, they are greatly being deprived of their fundamental rights. They do not get proper food and clothing, proper care and a healthy environment to live in. At the age when the children are supposed to be at school with books in hand, they are forced to work to search for a living either in a garment factory or as a hotel boy or as a tempo helper or so on. Sometimes they engage themselves to collect garbage and sometimes have to work in a very risky environment in a factory. As a result, their physical and mental development is hindered and they live an inhuman life. However, child labor is inhuman and this cruel practice is banned in about all the countries of the world. But as a matter of fact, it is not so easy to stop child labor just with a declaration. The harsh facts about child labor, in case of the third world countries, are that children willingly go to work in need of living in order to save them from the cruel hunger. Parents also like to engage their children in wage-earning work as, they think, it will supplement their family income and thus they will get rid of hardship of maintenance of their family. In this situation, none should expect the government alone to solve this problem single-handed. All concerned should come forward to save the future generation of the world from heavy torture of work and make opportunity of protecting all of their rights including education. Ultimately all expect a happy world completely free from child-labor.

যখন কেউ শিশুকে কাজ করতে বাধ্য করে তখন তাকে শিশুশ্রম বলে। আন্তর্জাতিক আইন অনুসারে, যাদের বয়স ১৮ বছরের কম তাদের শিশু বলা হয় এবং যদি তারা কাজ করতে বাধ্য হয় তবে এই শ্রমকে শিশুশ্রম বলা হয়। শিশুশ্রম সম্পূর্ণরূপে নিষিদ্ধ এবং কোনো শিশুকে পুরুষের জন্য প্রযোজ্য কোনো কাজে নিয়োজিত করা শাস্তিযোগ্য। কিন্তু বাস্তবতা হলো আইনের তোয়াক্কা না করে নির্বিচারে মিল-কারখানায় শিশুদের কায়িক পরিশ্রম করানো হচ্ছে। ফলে তারা তাদের মৌলিক অধিকার থেকে ব্যাপকভাবে বঞ্চিত হচ্ছে। তারা সঠিক খাদ্য ও বস্ত্র, সঠিক পরিচর্যা এবং বসবাসের জন্য একটি স্বাস্থ্যকর পরিবেশ পায় না। যে বয়সে বাচ্চাদের হাতে বই নিয়ে স্কুলে যাওয়ার কথা, সেই বয়সে তারা জীবিকার সন্ধানে কাজ করতে বাধ্য হয় গার্মেন্টস ফ্যাক্টরিতে বা হোটেল বয় বা টেম্পো হেলপার হিসাবে বা এরূপ কোন কাজে। কখনো তারা নিজেদেরকে আবর্জনা সংগ্রহে নিয়োজিত করে আবার কখনো কারখানায় অত্যন্ত ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ পরিবেশে কাজ করতে হয়। ফলে তাদের শারীরিক ও মানসিক বিকাশ বাধাগ্রস্ত হয় এবং তারা মানবেতর জীবনযাপন করে। যাই হোক, শিশুশ্রম অমানবিক এবং এই নিষ্ঠুর প্রথা বিশ্বের প্রায় সব দেশেই নিষিদ্ধ। কিন্তু প্রকৃত পক্ষে শুধু ঘোষণা দিয়ে শিশুশ্রম বন্ধ করা এত সহজ নয়। শিশুশ্রম সম্পর্কে কঠোর বাস্তবতা, তৃতীয় বিশ্বের দেশগুলির ক্ষেত্রে, এই যে, শিশুরা নিষ্ঠুর ক্ষুধা থেকে বাঁচার জন্য স্বেচ্ছায় জীবনধারণের প্রয়োজনে কাজ করতে যায়। পিতামাতারাও তাদের সন্তানদের মজুরি-উপার্জনের কাজে নিযুক্ত করতে পছন্দ করে কারণ তারা মনে করে, এটি তাদের পারিবারিক আয়ের পরিপূরক হবে এবং এইভাবে তারা তাদের পরিবারের ভরণপোষণের কষ্ট থেকে মুক্তি পাবে। এমতাবস্থায় সরকারের একার পক্ষে এ সমস্যার সমাধান কারোরই আশা করা উচিত নয়। বিশ্বের ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মকে কাজের অত্যাচার থেকে বাঁচাতে এবং শিক্ষাসহ সকল অধিকার রক্ষার সুযোগ করে দিতে সংশ্লিষ্ট সকলকে এগিয়ে আসতে হবে। পরিশেষে সবাই শিশুশ্রম থেকে সম্পূর্ণ মুক্ত একটি সুখী পৃথিবী আশা করে।
