Begging has existed in human society since the dawn of recorded history. Many beggars beg for alms wandering about here and there, in the streets and crowded places. They are called street beggars. Begging is the most disreputable practice as a livelihood and is a hateful deed. Yet, there is hardly any country in the world where there is no street beggar. There are many street beggars who have reasonable cause to rely on others’ charity to live. 
Those who are helpless, blind, lame, crippled and extremely old, who have no other means to survive can adopt this way of living. But there are other beggars who, despite having the ability to earn, have taken begging as their profession. If people give them alms out or pity, they encourage begging which is defamatory for a society. However a street beggar is found begging usually in public places sitting, standing or walking alone or in a group. They are naturally ugly-looking and are always seen trying to draw the attention of the passers-by stretching out their hand or begging bowl. Besides money, they can also ask for food, drink, clothes and any other small things they are tempted for. Every beggar has his/her own way and technique to ask for alms. They naturally appeal to someone with a piteous tone creating religious mode by the name of God. Lastly, as beggars look for donors, there are some affluent people in the society who look for beggars to donate. Yet we should not encourage begging from our conscious layer of mind.

মানব সমাজে ভিক্ষাবৃত্তি চালু ছিল রেকর্ডকৃত ইতিহাসের সূচনা লগ্ন থেকে। অনেক ভিক্ষুক ভিক্ষা করে এখানে সেখানে ঘোরাঘুরি করে, রাস্তায় এবং জনাকীর্ণ স্থানে। তাদেরকে বলা হয় রাস্তার ভিক্ষুক। ভিক্ষাবৃত্তি জীবিকা হিসাবে সবচেয়ে অসম্মানজনক এবং ঘৃণিত কাজ । তথাপি পৃথিবীর খুব কম দেশেই আছে যেখানে রাস্তার ভিক্ষুক নেই। অনেক ভিক্ষুক আছে যাদের সঙ্গত কারণ আছে অপরের বদান্যতার উপরে নির্ভর করে বেঁচে থাকার। যারা অসহায় অন্ধ, খোঁড়া, পঙ্গু এবং অত্যন্ত বৃদ্ধ, যাদের বেঁচে থাকার জন্য অন্য কোন উপায় নেই তারা বেঁচে থাকার প্রয়োজনে এই পথ অবলম্বন করতে পারে। কিন্তু অন্যান্য ভিক্ষুক ও আছে যারা উপার্জন করার সক্ষমতা থাকা সত্ত্বেও ভিক্ষাবৃত্তিকে পেশা হিসেবে গ্রহণ করেছে। যদি মানুষেরা তাদেরকে করুণা বশত ভিক্ষা দেয়, তাহলে তারা ভিক্ষাবৃত্তিকেই উৎসাহিত করে যাহা সমাজের জন্য অপমানজনক। যাই হোক, রাস্তার ভিক্ষুকদের সচরাচর ভিক্ষা করতে দেখা যায় জনসমাগমস্থলে, বসে, দাঁড়িয়ে অথবা হেঁটে- একাকী অথবা দলবদ্ধ ভাবে। তারা দেখতে কুৎসিত থাকে এবং সর্বদা দেখা যায় তাদের হাত অথবা ভিক্ষার বাটিটা বাড়িয়ে দিয়ে পথচারীর দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে। টাকা ছাড়াও তারা চাইতে পারে খাদ্য, পানীয্ পোশাক-আশাক এবং অন্যান্য ছোটখাট জিনিস যার প্রতি তারা প্রলুব্ধ হয়। প্রতিটি ভিক্ষুকেরই তাদের ভিক্ষা চাওয়ার নিজস্ব উপায় ও কৌশল আছে। তারা সচরাচর অপরের কাছে কিছু পেতে আবেদন করে করুন সুরে আল্লাহর নামে ধর্মীয় আবহ সৃষ্টি করিয়া । পরিশেষে যেহেতু ভিক্ষুকেরা দাতা খুঁজে বেড়ায় সেহেতু সমাজে কিছু সমৃদ্ধশালী মানুষ থাকে যারা ভিক্ষুক খুঁজে বেড়ায় দান করার জন্য। তথাপি আমাদের উচিত নয় ভিক্ষাবৃত্তিকে উৎসাহিত করা আমাদের মনের সচেতন স্তর থেকে।
