খরগোশ ও কচ্ছপ / ধীরস্থিররাই জয়ী হয়
একদা এক খরগোশ ও এক কচ্ছপ বাস করত। খরগোশ একটি দ্রুতগামী প্রাণী হওয়ায় সে তার গতির জন্য গর্বিত ছিল। সে কচ্ছপটিকে তার ধীর-গতির জন্য উত্যক্ত করত। সে কচ্ছপকে দৌড় প্রতিযোগিতায় আমন্ত্রণও জানাত। যাইহোক, একদিন কচ্ছপ আমন্ত্রণ গ্রহণ করল এবং তাকে প্রতিযোগিতার জন্য একটি তারিখ ঠিক করার প্রস্তাব দিল। এতে খরগোশ খুব মজা পেল। তবে একটি তারিখ নির্ধারণ করা হল। একটি শিয়াল অন্যান্য প্রাণীদের সাথে নিয়ে দৌড় দেখতে আসল।
কিন্তু কচ্ছপ তার ধীর পদক্ষেপেই ছুটে যেতে থাকে। কোথাও থামেনি সে। যখন সে ঝোপের পাশ দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল তখন দেখল যে অলস খরগোশ গভীর ঘুমে আচ্ছন্ন।
সে চুপচাপ খরগোশের পাশ দিয়ে চলে গেল। অনেক ঘন্টা কেটে গেল। খরগোশ জেগে উঠল এবং খুব দ্রুত ছুটতে লাগল। কিন্তু হায়! ততক্ষণে কচ্ছপটি বিজয়ী পোস্ট অতিক্রম করছে। শেষ হাসি হাসল কচ্ছপ। খরগোশ তার লম্বা লম্বা কথার জন্য লজ্জা পেল। সে নিজেকে বলল, “সত্যিই ধীর-স্থিররাই জয়ী হয়।”
A Hare and a Tortoise/Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Once there lived a hare and a tortoise. As the hare is a speedy animal, he was proud of his motion. He used to tease the tortoise for its slow pace. He would also invite the tortoise to run a race. However, one day the tortoise accepted the invitation and proposed to him fixing up a date for the competition. At this the hare got much amused. However a date was fixed. A fox with other animals came to see the race.
On a nice morning the race began. The hare began to run very fast. He crossed a mile jumping in a few minutes. He looked back and noticed that the tortoise was far behind him. Then he stopped and thought the tortoise would not be able to run past him. Thinking this, he wanted to have a little rest and soon fell asleep in a bush.
But the tortoise continued running at his slow pace. He did not stop anywhere. When he was passing the bush he saw that the lazy hare was lying fast asleep.
He quietly passed by the hare. Many hours passed by. The hare woke up and began to run very fast. But alas! By this time the tortoise was already crossing the winning post. The tortoise laughed the ending laugh. The hare felt ashamed for his tall talk. He said to himself, “Slow and steady really wins the race”.
